Only a couple of weeks ago, I did my work experience at on3radio. I heard of them through their yearly on3radio concert, which included Lightspeed Champion’s final performance of 2008. Even though he cancelled because of voice problems, I’m still glad I found this station. It’s digital only and owned by the most popular radio company in Bavaria, who publish Bayern 1, 2, 3 and 4. I have no fear in saying German FM radio is awful, incredibly awful. There isn’t one good station; all they play is horrible top 40 hits from the 80s, that people who lived through that time would not know and a “hit single” six months too late, which is then repeated twenty times a day. I’m not overemphasising.
On3radio is not like that. They play everything that is good, from electronica to rap to indie. And everyone within it’s walls obviously loves music, whether it’s Reggae or Hip-Hop, they will still be open to anything anyone wants to show them. Here is what they are playing within the next half hour.
- Architecture in Helsinki That Beep (Radioclit’s French Mix)
- Rosalie und Jakob Wand
- Atlas Sound Feat. Panda Bear Walkabout
- The XX Crystalised
- Telekinesis Awkward Kisser
- Marvin Gaye What`s Going On?
- Band Of Horses The Funeral
- Jay Reatard It Ain’t Gonna Save Me
- Jay-Z feat. Rihanna & Kanye West Run This Town
- Madonna Drowned World/Substitute for Love
- New Order Crystal
- Donaeo Party Hard
Pretty good. At least I think so, and so I applied for my work experience and they gave me the privilege of working there. They let me choose songs to put in their database, learn everything that happens there, record a segment and even go live on the radio, twice. It was quite exciting and hard, both of the segments I had to write were in German, and both the live radio segments were done in German. I think I survived though.
Though all of this was amazing, the reason I enjoyed working there so much was the people. It’s cheesy, I know, however they treated me like an equal. I wasn’t just some punk kid who was going to make coffee, they gave me tasks which other people do for a living.
If you get a chance, please stream from their radio station, I say without bias that it’s the best I’ve come across. Really. I would like somebody to point me out a better one. Only the four to six o’clock section is done with actual German programmes, while the rest of the day is just music. If you don’t listen to radio, like me, at least look at their blog or website, they have free mp3 downloads and lots of information on new music. And if you want a taste of something new from Germany, every week they have “Bayerishe Band der Woche” (Bavarian Band of the Week).
Thanks on3radio.
I’ve linked to the two segments I wrote for their website here:
